Makueni County – Community Water Security & Climate Resilience Project

Location: Makueni County, Kenya
Focus Areas: Water Security | Climate Mitigation | Community Resilience

Securing Water for Drought-Resilient Communities

In Makueni County, Restoration of Planet Earth works with local communities to address water scarcity and increasing drought pressures through affordable, community-led water solutions. The project promotes low-cost sand dams, rooftop rainwater harvesting, water conservation, and landscape restoration to improve access to reliable water.

Alongside water infrastructure, communities are encouraged to restore vegetation and protect natural water sources through tree planting and Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR). These combined approaches help improve water availability, protect soils, restore ecosystems, and strengthen community resilience to climate change.

Key Activities:

  • Construction and promotion of low-cost sand dams
  • Rooftop rainwater harvesting
  • Tree planting and native ecosystem restoration
  • Farmer-Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR)
  • Community training on water conservation
  • Climate adaptation and resilience awareness

Impact:
The project is helping communities develop locally managed solutions that improve water security while strengthening their capacity to cope with drought and environmental degradation.
